COPPER LITZ TONEARM WIRE Ideal for tonearm re-wiring £1/m
I have tried all sorts of tonearm wires & found this the easiest to work with giving the most consistent results. I found the plastic coated Cardas type stuff hard to strip , & tinning the wire left a messy end to the insulation which does not withstand the heat.

8 QUALITY TONEARM CARTRIDGE TAGS + HEAT SHRINK £4.50
Most of these type of tags are normally made to fit 0.04 inch diameter cartridge pins. However, almost all cartridge pins are actually made at 0.05 inches. This results in much effort for insertion and you almost always must resort to pliers. These tags are made to fit 0.05 inch pins. They are gold-flashed for improved conductivity, and come in a more convenient to grasp length of 0.577 inches. For added durability, the tag ends have a metal wrap-around strain relief.
Crimp can easily be snipped off for direct soldering if desired.

TONEARM RE-WIRING KIT £8.00
Sold these on my eBay shop for years, but
packed that up now. I still have material available, so will keep on selling
here at reduced price if there is any demand.
The kit consists of:
- 4m Copper
Litz wire (30 strands, 0.3mm total diameter)
- 4
cartridge tags
- 4 heatshrink sleeves
The cartridge tags are a bit unusual. I have searched long and hard for something that was durable to withstand dozens of re-insertions, was easy to insert, made great contact and was cheap. These differ from the usual D-clip because it wraps completely around the cartridge pin on 4 sides and there is minimal stress on it. The D-clips have 2 prongs that are spread apart which can be initially tight and difficult to insert. Once they are on, I find the next time they go on it will be easy, but not as tight as the prongs have spread apart permanently. I used to overcome this by using heat-shrink right to the tip to hold the prongs together, but this always made insertion tricky.
The cartridge tags can be trimmed to size depending on how long you want them:
The wire, being copper litz, consists of 30 strands of OFC. Each strand is enamelled so insulated from each other and wrapped together with silk thread. The wire is non-conductive until you tin the ends which I usually do with a hot iron (450C) and a blob of solder in contact with the end of the wire. This will burn the silk & enamel off and leave a nice tinned end you can solder onto the tag.
I used to attach the tags by pinching the metal wings around the wire with small pliers, then running solder ii between the wire & metal. I would then nip away the excess:
I would then apply the heatshrink just short of the tip of the tag where there is a convenient split:
The tip on these tags easily slip onto the cartridge pin with little resistance up to the first split. Then its a snug fit to insert the main body of the tag. This operation can be repeated dozens of times without any degradation.
The wire is not colour coded, but easily takes a felt tip pen.
I found the litz tough & easy to work with as opposed to the cardas stuff where I always burned off the plastic insulation & made a mess! I used this on my Terminator air bearing arm & was wonderfully flexible.
The only negative was the silk wire could get tatty with repeated handling of the wire, but in a regular pivot arm I dont think it will be an issue and most of it is enclosed, unlike my air arm. Even though the outer coating could expose the inner copper strands, these still remained insulated.
Cost for the kit is £6 + shipping (£1.55 Large Letter UK)

The best way to
tin the ends is to use a hot iron (over 400 degrees) & run the wire tip
thru a bead of molten solder. This will burn off the silk, fuse it so it wont
unravel, & tin the copper at the same time. |
INSTRUCTIONS SOLDERING TAGS
If your cartridge pins are on the small side, extend heat shrink to the tip of the tag:
